The Samurai – Heaven and Hell. A very combative and aggressive samurai demanded that a Zen master explain the difference between heaven and hell to him. The master replied, “You are nothing but a boor, and I will not waste my precious time with the likes of you!”

Wounded in Honor and Full of Rage

The samurai, wounded in his honor and full of rage, drew his sword from its sheath and shouted at the priest, “For your insolence, you shall die!” “That,” the master calmly replied, “is hell.”

Astonished by the realization and the truth of the priest’s words, the samurai calmed down. He sheathed his sword and bowed to the master, thanking him for the insight. “And that,” said the priest, “is heaven.”
